Football Sunday. Atlanta Friday and Saturday. That's the trip.
This is one of those Lions road trips where I'd build the weekend around the city instead of making everything about the stadium. Atlanta gives you food, neighborhoods, museums, nightlife and plenty to do before Sunday's game. The trick is deciding what kind of Atlanta weekend you want before choosing the hotel.

The Falcons have designated this as one of their 2026 throwback-uniform games.
Gibbs and Robinson were the first two running backs selected in the 2023 NFL Draft. Three seasons later, both have become major pieces of their offenses. That gives this December game a pretty good football storyline before we even get to the road trip.
A Friday-to-Monday weekend gives you enough time to enjoy Atlanta without needing to turn one football game into a week-long vacation.
Get into Atlanta, check in and have a good dinner. There is no reason to start the weekend by racing from attraction to attraction.
Make this the Atlanta day. Pick the part of the city you actually want to experience and give yourself time to enjoy it.
1:00 PM football at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Build the morning around getting downtown without turning it into a traffic experiment.
Head home without trying to squeeze the airport into the fourth quarter.
Even if you've been to plenty of NFL stadiums, this one doesn't look like most of them.

You don't have to choose this road trip based on whether you want to sit outside for three hours in December.
Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead can all work. They just don't create the same weekend. A hotel that looks like a bargain can stop feeling like one if you spend the entire trip going back and forth across Atlanta.
The easiest starting point if the Lions game is the center of the trip. Mercedes-Benz Stadium and several major Atlanta attractions are in or around the downtown area.
A good option if you want restaurants, nightlife and more of the city around you while still keeping downtown reasonably accessible.
More hotels, restaurants and shopping, but you're farther from Mercedes-Benz Stadium and transportation becomes a bigger part of the weekend.
Whatever area you choose, easy access to Atlanta's rail system can be worth considering if you don't want the whole trip built around driving and parking.
Don't try to see all of Atlanta in one day. Pick a couple things that actually interest you.
A major downtown attraction and an easy choice if you're staying nearby or traveling with kids.
Another downtown option that can pair naturally with the aquarium instead of sending you across the city.
A meaningful Atlanta stop for travelers interested in history and the civil rights movement.
If you're already making a football trip, adding a little more football to Saturday probably isn't the worst idea.
Spend part of the day around Midtown if restaurants, Piedmont Park or a less attraction-heavy day sounds better.
Also a perfectly acceptable Atlanta plan. Pick a restaurant or two you actually want to try and stop pretending every vacation needs an attraction every hour.
I wouldn't create an hour-by-hour restaurant itinerary. I also wouldn't wait until Saturday night with a group of people asking, “So where do you want to eat?”
Pick at least one restaurant the group is excited about and make the reservation if one is needed.
If dinner and nightlife matter, hotel location becomes part of the restaurant decision instead of a completely separate choice.
A restaurant can look close on a map and still turn into more transportation than you wanted. Group things geographically when you can.
Nobody needs the lasting memory of the Falcons trip to be sitting in traffic watching kickoff get closer.
Walking, MARTA, rideshare or driving can all work depending on where you stay. Decide before Sunday morning.
Don't let the early kickoff fool you into thinking you have all morning. Breakfast, transportation, crowds and stadium entry eat up time quickly.
Look at the parking plan before game day instead of circling downtown hoping something appears.
If you're staying Sunday night, there is no reason to turn the final whistle into a race for the airport.

Is this mostly football, mostly Atlanta or an even split? That answer helps narrow down where to stay.
I'd choose Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead or another area before choosing a hotel based only on price.
Your game-day transportation should be part of the hotel decision, not something you figure out after the room is booked.
Atlanta is spread out. Two good things plus dinner can make a much better Saturday than six things connected by traffic.
Atlanta has the Lions game scheduled as a throwback-uniform game. It doesn't change how you plan the trip, but it gives the Week 13 matchup a little extra personality.
Atlanta is the kind of road trip where I would start with the hotel area instead of the hotel. Figure out what you want Friday and Saturday to look like, decide how you want to get to the game Sunday and then find the hotel that makes those things easier. If you do that, you've got indoor football, plenty to do, good food and a December Lions trip where nobody has to spend the weekend worrying about snow.
