Royal Caribbean and Sandals Are Joining Forces — What Does It Mean for Travelers?

This is a pretty big development in the travel world.

Royal Caribbean Group and Sandals Resorts have announced a new partnership that brings together two names most travelers probably wouldn’t have expected to see under the same umbrella.

Royal Caribbean Group plans to invest approximately $3 billion for a 50% interest in a joint venture that includes Sandals and Beaches Resorts. The deal is expected to close in early 2027, assuming the required approvals and closing conditions are met.

So what does that actually mean if you’re planning a vacation?

For right now, probably less than you might think.

But down the road, this could get pretty interesting.

First, Royal Caribbean Isn’t Buying All of Sandals

That’s an important distinction.

Royal Caribbean Group is acquiring a 50% interest in the new joint venture. Sandals Executive Chairman Adam Stewart will remain involved in guiding the long-term direction of Sandals and Beaches Resorts.

It also brings Sandals and Beaches into a much larger vacation portfolio.

Royal Caribbean Group already includes Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea, along with its growing collection of private destinations. Celebrity Cruises is also preparing to enter river cruising.

Adding all-inclusive Caribbean resorts gives the company another completely different type of vacation experience.

What Happens If You Already Have a Sandals, Beaches or Royal Caribbean Vacation Booked?

Nothing changes right now.

According to the announcement, existing reservations, loyalty programs, resort operations and cruise operations will continue as usual.

So if you already have a Sandals honeymoon booked, a Beaches family vacation planned or a Royal Caribbean cruise coming up, there isn’t anything you need to change because of this announcement.

Why I Think This Is Worth Watching

This is the part that interests me as a travel advisor.

Royal Caribbean has spent the last several years becoming more than just a cruise company. It has been developing private destinations and beach experiences, and Celebrity Cruises is scheduled to enter river cruising in 2027.

Now add Sandals and Beaches.

Sandals brings established adults-only all-inclusive resorts throughout the Caribbean, while Beaches brings the family all-inclusive side.

That means the overall vacation portfolio will eventually include cruises, private destinations, river cruises, adults-only all-inclusive resorts and family all-inclusive resorts.

That’s a lot of different ways to take a vacation.

Could This Mean Cruise-and-Resort Vacations?

Maybe — but I wouldn’t count on anything just yet.

The companies have said they plan to explore ways to broaden distribution, increase guest engagement and make it easier for travelers to discover vacation experiences across both portfolios.

They have not announced specific Royal Caribbean and Sandals cruise-and-resort packages as part of this announcement.

Still, it’s easy to see why that possibility will get people’s attention.

Imagine spending several nights at a Sandals resort and then taking a Royal Caribbean cruise — or combining a Beaches family vacation with a cruise.

Those aren’t announced vacation packages. But with the companies now working together, I’ll definitely be watching to see what they eventually come up with.

What About Loyalty Programs?

This is another area I’m watching.

For now, the existing loyalty programs continue as usual.

There aren’t enough details yet to say whether this partnership will eventually mean new benefits between Royal Caribbean, Sandals or Beaches.

So for now, I wouldn’t make vacation decisions based on points, status or possible future benefits that haven’t been announced.

What Does This Mean for Sandals and Beaches?

One of the goals of the partnership is growth.

Royal Caribbean’s investment will provide additional resources to help Sandals and Beaches expand while continuing to build on more than four decades in Caribbean hospitality.

That could eventually mean more choices for travelers, but we’ll have to wait for actual announcements before we know where that growth will happen or exactly what it will look like.

For Travelers, Nothing Needs to Change Today

If you’re currently considering a Sandals resort, Beaches vacation or Royal Caribbean cruise, I wouldn’t change those plans because of this news.

Pick the vacation that makes sense for your trip right now.

The interesting part is what happens next.

Royal Caribbean and Sandals are two very recognizable names in Caribbean vacations, but they’ve traditionally offered very different experiences. Bringing the two together opens up some possibilities that simply weren’t there before.

And as those details start coming out, I’ll be watching them.

Because the part that ultimately matters isn’t that two giant travel companies made a $3 billion deal.

It’s whether that deal eventually gives travelers better choices, better vacation options or an easier way to put the right trip together.

And that’s the part I’ll be paying attention to.
