Help Me Choose a Caribbean Island or Resort

There really isn't one “best” Caribbean destination. The better question is which one fits the vacation you actually want.

Some travelers want a beautiful beach and an easy all-inclusive resort. Others care more about restaurants, golf, snorkeling, fishing, nightlife, romance, family activities or getting out and exploring.

Those differences matter. Two Caribbean destinations can look almost identical in vacation photos and give you completely different trips once you get there.

Don't start by asking which island everybody else likes best. Start with what you want your vacation to be like.

What Kind of Trip Are You Planning?

You don't have to pick a destination first. Thinking about who's going and what you want to do usually makes the Caribbean much easier to narrow down.

Family Getaway
For families, the island is only part of the decision. Room layouts, pools, beach conditions, children's activities, dining, transfer time and how easy it is to keep different ages happy can matter just as much. Punta Cana, Jamaica, Aruba, The Bahamas, Turks & Caicos and Cancún can all work — but for different reasons.
Honeymoon or Romantic Trip
Romance can mean a quiet adults-only resort, an incredible beach, dramatic scenery, private dining, great sunsets or enough activities that you don't spend the entire trip sitting at the resort. St. Lucia, Aruba, Turks & Caicos and Jamaica can all create very different romantic vacations.
Golf Trip
If golf is a major part of the vacation, start with the courses instead of choosing the beach first. Casa de Campo is one of the Caribbean's standout golf resort experiences, while Punta Cana and other destinations can combine golf with a more traditional resort vacation. What the non-golfers want to do matters too.
Adults-Only Escape
“Adults-only” doesn't automatically mean quiet or romantic. Some resorts are peaceful and couples-focused. Others are social, lively and built around entertainment. The atmosphere of the resort and what is outside the resort matter just as much as the adults-only label.
Adventure & Exploring
If you want to do more than sit at the resort, look closely at what you can actually do once you get there. Waterfalls, snorkeling, diving, fishing, hiking, off-road tours, historic areas, local food, sailing and cultural experiences vary a lot from one destination to another.
The same kind of vacation can work in several Caribbean destinations.

That's why the next step isn't picking a winner. Next we'll look at what the different destinations are especially good at — beaches, all-inclusive resorts, families, romance, golf, food, nightlife, water activities, exploring and more.

Which Caribbean Destinations Are Especially Good For What?

Most Caribbean destinations can give you a beach and a nice resort. The differences become more important when you start thinking about what you actually want to do and how you want the vacation to feel.

The Cheapest Destination Isn't Always the Best Value.

A lower room price doesn't automatically mean a less expensive vacation. Flights, airport transfers, resort location, food and drinks, room setup, activities and how much transportation you'll need after you arrive can change the total cost quite a bit.

That's why it makes more sense to compare the whole vacation instead of automatically choosing whichever resort has the lowest advertised price.

Already down to two or three destinations?

Next we'll compare Caribbean destinations side by side. That's where the differences in beaches, resorts, food, activities, atmosphere and the overall trip become much easier to see.

Torn Between Two Caribbean Destinations?

Once you've narrowed it down to a couple of possibilities, comparing them side by side is usually more useful than looking at another list of resorts.

Compare the vacation — not just the resort.

Two destinations can both have beautiful beaches and excellent resorts and still give you completely different trips. Look at the beaches, resort style, food, activities, atmosphere, getting around and what you can do once you leave the resort.

What If the Comparison You Want Isn't Here?

Don't rule either destination out. Open both destination guides and compare the things that actually matter to your trip — the beach, resort areas, activities, food, atmosphere, transportation and how you picture spending your time.

Sometimes two places that look very similar on paper turn out to be very different once you start looking at the vacation itself.

Before you choose, there are a few practical things worth knowing.

Next we'll get into some of the details first-time Caribbean travelers often overlook — resort location, room categories, airport transfers, getting around, weather, beach conditions and what “all-inclusive” actually includes.

What First-Time Caribbean Travelers Often Miss

A beautiful resort photo doesn't show everything that affects the vacation. A few practical details can make a much bigger difference than people expect.

Resort Area
Two resorts on the same island can give you completely different vacations. Beach conditions, restaurants, nightlife, transfer time, the surrounding area and how easy it is to get to activities can all change depending on where you stay.
Room Category
Picking the resort is only part of the decision. Room categories can differ in view, building location, bedding, maximum occupancy, balcony or terrace, included services and distance from the beach or main resort areas. The cheapest room isn't automatically the right room.
Airport & Transfer Time
A destination may look perfect until you realize the resort is another long ride after the flight. Some trips have simple airport transfers. Others can involve long drives, ferries, boats or additional connections. That can matter a lot on a shorter vacation.
Getting Around
Think about whether you actually want to leave the resort. Some areas make it easy to reach restaurants, shops, bars and activities. In others, taxis, private transportation, rental cars or organized excursions may be the normal way to get around.
Weather & Timing
The Caribbean is warm, but the weather isn't identical everywhere. Rain patterns, tropical storm and hurricane exposure, wind, sea conditions, crowds, pricing and seasonal events can vary depending on the destination and time of year.
Beach Conditions
“Beachfront resort” doesn't tell you whether the water is calm, rough, rocky, shallow or affected by seasonal seaweed. If the beach is a major part of the trip, look at the actual beach experience instead of just whether the hotel sits next to the ocean.
All-Inclusive Doesn't Mean the Same Thing Everywhere
One resort may include nearly everything while another charges extra for certain restaurants, premium drinks, activities, room service, golf, spa services or transportation. The value is in what you'll actually use, not just the words “all-inclusive.”
Flights Matter Too
A slightly more expensive resort can still make more sense if the flights are easier or less expensive. Flight schedules, nonstop options, baggage costs, departure airport and total travel time are part of the real vacation cost too.

There Usually Isn't One Perfect Caribbean Destination.

There are usually several destinations that could work. The real question is which trade-offs matter most to you.

One destination may have the better beach. Another may have better resort value. Another might have easier flights, better golf, more activities or restaurants you can walk to. That's why choosing the vacation you want usually works better than picking an island because somebody else said it was “the best.”

You Don't Have to Figure Out the Entire Vacation Before We Start.

If you've narrowed it down to one destination, great. If you're still deciding between two or three, that's fine too. That's useful information for me to have.

Start the Trip Starter and tell me what kind of Caribbean vacation you're looking for. We'll use that as the starting point instead of making you figure out every resort and every detail on your own.
