Two parks can both be great and still be completely different vacations.
That's why I don't think a theme park comparison should just be a list of rides followed by somebody declaring a winner. Cedar Point and Kings Island aren't the same trip. Dollywood and Hersheypark aren't the same trip. And deciding between Tokyo Disney and Disneyland Paris is really deciding between two very different international vacations.
The better way to compare them is to look at who's going, what everybody wants to do, how far you want to travel and what else you want around the park.
The question isn't always “Which park is better?” It's “Which one makes more sense for this trip?”

These two have their own full guides because there's a lot more involved than comparing a few attractions.

Both are Ohio parks with serious coaster lineups, but I wouldn't choose between them just by counting roller coasters.
Cedar Point is the first place I'd look if somebody tells me the main reason for the trip is roller coasters. Steel Vengeance, Millennium Force, Maverick and the rest of the lineup make the rides a huge part of Cedar Point's identity.
Kings Island also has major coasters — including The Beast, Diamondback, Orion, Banshee and Mystic Timbers — but I think it's especially worth comparing when you have a group that wants big rides without everybody needing to be a coaster fanatic.
If the conversation is basically, “We want to go ride coasters for a couple of days,” I'd compare the exact rides everybody cares about and then look at the drive, hotel and overall trip around them.
The first thing I'd ask here is: Which Six Flags?
Cedar Point is one specific destination in Sandusky, Ohio. You know which park you're comparing.
Six Flags operates parks in different parts of the country, and they're not interchangeable. The ride lineup, park size, location and the rest of the trip can be completely different depending on which one you're considering.
So I wouldn't really compare Cedar Point to “Six Flags.” I'd compare Cedar Point to the specific Six Flags park that makes sense for where you're willing to travel.
These are good choices when you want the park to be an important part of the vacation without needing it to be the entire vacation.
Both can give you great park days and plenty to do outside the park. The bigger difference may be where you want to spend the rest of the vacation.
Dollywood fits naturally into a Pigeon Forge and Smoky Mountains vacation. You can have a park day, spend time in the mountains and do other things around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg without the whole trip revolving around rides.
Hersheypark has a big ride lineup, coasters, family attractions and water-park fun during its summer season. The Hershey area also gives you other things to do outside the park.
If I were helping a family choose, I'd want to know whether they are more excited about the Smoky Mountains or Hershey before I worried about which park has one more ride they might like.
This is really a Smoky Mountains versus Branson/Ozarks vacation with two theme parks in the middle of the decision.
Dollywood gives you the park plus Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains.
Silver Dollar City fits naturally into a Branson and Ozarks vacation. The park mixes rides with craftsmen, live entertainment and seasonal festivals.
Both can work for families that want more than roller coasters. I'd choose the surrounding destination first and then make sure the park itself has enough for everybody going.
Who is traveling? Which rides or experiences actually matter? How far do you want to go? Is the park the whole vacation or just one part of it? Those questions will usually tell you more than somebody else's Top 10 list.
Both can be a full water-park day. If you're already staying at Disney or Universal, that may make the decision easier.
Volcano Bay fits naturally into a Universal Orlando vacation. It has bigger thrill slides, family experiences, a wave pool, lazy-river-style experiences and plenty of places to slow down.
Typhoon Lagoon fits naturally into a Walt Disney World vacation and has its own mix of slides, family attractions, a large wave pool and Castaway Creek.
One thing I would always check before building the trip around either one is the operating calendar. Water parks can have seasonal or maintenance closures.
For example, Universal currently lists Volcano Bay for a seasonal maintenance closure beginning October 26, 2026 and continuing through March 31, 2027. That's exactly the kind of detail I'd verify again for the actual travel dates instead of assuming a water park will be open.
These two have enough similarities that people compare them, but where you're staying can make this decision a lot easier.
SeaWorld Orlando combines major coasters, family attractions and animal experiences right in Orlando. If you're already staying in the Orlando area, it's much easier to work into that vacation.
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay also has major coasters and animal experiences, but it's in Tampa. That can make it a great fit for a Tampa or Gulf Coast trip.
You can certainly visit Busch Gardens while staying in Orlando, but I would account for the drive instead of treating it like another park right down the street.
Once you're flying overseas, I think the country and the rest of the vacation should matter just as much as the park.
I wouldn't make this decision by asking which Disney resort ranks higher online. I'd start with whether you want to go to Japan or Europe.
Tokyo Disney Resort has two parks — Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. If Japan is already somewhere you want to visit, Disney can become a great part of a much bigger Japan vacation.
Disneyland Paris also has two parks — Disneyland Park and Disney Adventure World. The second park officially changed from Walt Disney Studios Park to Disney Adventure World on March 29, 2026, along with a major expansion that includes World of Frozen.
Disneyland Paris can fit naturally into a Paris or larger European vacation, while Tokyo Disney makes more sense as part of a Japan trip. That's the comparison I'd make first.
If you're already planning Japan, this can be a fun decision because the two experiences are very different.
Universal Studios Japan is in Osaka and can be a great fit if Universal, Nintendo and thrill rides are high on your list. SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is a major reason many travelers want to go.
Tokyo Disney Resort is near Tokyo and gives you two separate Disney parks, including Tokyo DisneySea.
This may come down to more than Nintendo versus Disney. If you're already visiting both Tokyo and Osaka, you may not have to choose. If time is limited, I'd look at the rest of the Japan itinerary before deciding which park gets the days.
They share the Universal name, but I wouldn't plan them as if they're the same kind of trip.
Universal Orlando is a multi-park resort vacation with Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe and Volcano Bay, along with Universal hotels and CityWalk.
Universal Studios Hollywood is one theme park in the Los Angeles area, and its Studio Tour through the movie studio is something Orlando doesn't duplicate.
If you want several days built around Universal, Orlando makes more sense to compare. If Los Angeles is already the vacation and you want a Universal day while you're there, Hollywood fits naturally.
