Rob Sturdy Travels Theme Park Guide

Theme Park Comparisons

Compare the kind of park trip you are actually considering—not just which park has the longest ride list.

Coaster trips, family parks, water parks, Florida parks, and international theme park vacations are different decisions. Use these comparisons as a starting point, then check the current park calendars, attractions, tickets, and operating details before making the final plan.

These two decisions are large enough to have their own full pages because they can change the entire vacation.

Coaster Park Comparisons

Ride-First Trips

Cedar Point vs Kings Island

Both are major Ohio amusement parks with large coaster lineups and family attractions. The better choice depends on whether the trip is mainly about destination coasters or a broader park day.

Which way should I lean?+

Lean Cedar Point when major roller coasters are the reason for the trip. Cedar Point currently promotes 66 rides and highlights coasters including Steel Vengeance and Millennium Force.

Lean Kings Island when your group wants a mix of major rides and family time rather than building the entire trip around Cedar Point's coaster identity. Check Kings Island's current attraction lineup before booking because ride offerings and operating calendars change.

Cedar Point vs Six Flags

This comparison only works after you identify the specific Six Flags park. “Six Flags” is a collection of parks, not one interchangeable destination.

What matters most?+

Cedar Point makes sense when Sandusky itself is the ride-focused destination. Six Flags may make more sense when a specific Six Flags park is closer to home or fits another trip. Compare the exact Six Flags location rather than treating the brand as one park.

Family Destination Comparisons

Rides + Destination

Dollywood vs Hersheypark

Both combine major rides with a destination beyond the park gates, but the surrounding vacation feels very different.

Which trip fits better?+

Dollywood fits naturally into a Smoky Mountains vacation. Its official park information emphasizes coasters, kid-friendly attractions, entertainment, and Pigeon Forge.

Hersheypark combines a large ride lineup with family attractions and water-park fun. Hersheypark currently advertises more than 70 rides and attractions, including a large coaster lineup.

Dollywood vs Silver Dollar City

This is less about declaring one park better and more about choosing between two destination regions.

Smoky Mountains or Branson?+

Dollywood fits a Pigeon Forge/Smoky Mountains trip. Silver Dollar City fits a Branson/Ozarks trip and officially emphasizes rides, demonstrating craftsmen, live entertainment, and seasonal festivals. Choose the destination your family wants around the park.

A Better Comparison Rule

Don't crown a winner. Match the park to the trip.

The strongest comparison asks who is traveling, where the park fits in the vacation, which attractions matter, how far you want to travel, and whether the park is the whole trip or one day of a larger itinerary.

Water Park Comparison

Orlando Water Day

Universal Volcano Bay vs Disney's Typhoon Lagoon

Both can be a full water-park day, but availability and operating calendars matter.

Which one fits your Orlando trip?+

Volcano Bay fits naturally when Universal Orlando is already part of the vacation and offers both thrill and relaxation experiences.

Typhoon Lagoon fits naturally when Walt Disney World is already part of the trip and includes water slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river.

Do not assume either water park is operating on every travel date. Disney rotates/temporarily closes water parks at times, and Universal has announced a Volcano Bay maintenance closure beginning October 26, 2026 with reopening planned on or before April 1, 2027. Always check the current calendar.

Florida Park Comparison

Rides + Animals

SeaWorld Orlando vs Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Both mix rides with animal experiences, but location and attraction priorities can make the choice much easier.

Orlando or Tampa?+

SeaWorld Orlando combines roller coasters, family rides, animal encounters, presentations, and an Orlando location.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay combines major roller coasters with a large zoological component and animal experiences in Tampa. If your trip is based in Orlando, travel time to Tampa becomes part of the decision.

International Theme Park Comparisons

Build Around The Destination

Tokyo Disney Resort vs Disneyland Paris

This should be treated as a Japan-vs-Europe travel decision first, not simply a park ranking.

Which destination belongs in your trip?+

Tokyo Disney Resort includes Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. It makes the most sense when Japan is a destination you genuinely want to visit, not merely because one park wins an online ranking.

Disneyland Paris has two Disney parks and can fit naturally into a Paris/Europe itinerary. Disneyland Paris now refers to its second park as Disney Adventure World, so older references to Walt Disney Studios Park should be updated.

Universal Studios Japan vs Tokyo Disney Resort

Both can be major additions to a Japan trip, but they serve very different interests.

Nintendo or Disney?+

Universal Studios Japan currently features SUPER NINTENDO WORLD with attractions such as Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge, Yoshi's Adventure, and Mine Cart Madness.

Tokyo Disney Resort offers two separate Disney parks—Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. Choose based on the experiences your group cares about rather than assuming one is universally better.

Universal Orlando vs Universal Studios Hollywood

These are fundamentally different Universal trips.

Full resort or Hollywood park day?+

Universal Orlando is a multi-park resort vacation. Universal Studios Hollywood is a single theme-park destination built around Hollywood, including its World-Famous Studio Tour through a working movie studio. If Los Angeles is already part of your vacation, Hollywood can fit naturally as one day.
